September is just around the corner, and that means Labor Day is in our sights: a wonderful, three-day weekend for relaxing, kicking back and just enjoying time with family.

And in Schertz, that’s easy, thanks to its convenient location right in the heart of Hill Country. With easy access to some of the top sights, culture and cities in the Lone Star State, planning a day of fun isn’t just easy—it’s usually affordable, too.

Want to line up some Labor Day fun for your loved ones? Here are just a few Schertz are day trips and staycation ideas to get you started:

Canyon Lake

Located only about 30 miles north of Schertz, Canyon Lake has it all: boating tubing, jet skiing, fishing, camping, golfing, parasailing, scuba diving and more. There are even wineries in the area, or you can rent a boat, wave runner or fishing charter. Dine and shop on the waterfront, or just take a dip in the water and cool off. There’s something for all ages and interests here!

JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort & Spa

Enjoy that relaxing, resort vacation without driving more than half an hour at the JW Marriott San Antonio. Float around the hotel’s lazy river, enjoy the nine-acre on-site water park, take a load off at the Lantana Spa or get away from the kids for a bit at the adults-only infinity pool. There are also seven restaurants on site, as well as five-star links for the golfer in your life.

Bandera, Texas

Give the kids a taste of true Texas life at one of Bandera’s many real-life dude ranches. Try out horseback riding, tour the grounds on a hayride, build campfires and see various animals and wildlife.  Bandera also hosts a number of rodeo events throughout the year—something that can truly make your trip one to remember.

Comal River & Guadalupe River

Spend the day tubing down the Comal or Guadalupe rivers. Located in New Braunfels, both waterways are just a quick 20-minute drive north from Schertz and offer year-round 70-degree currents. If tubing’s not your favorite, head on over to nearby Landa Park, where there’s paddle boating, canoeing, hiking and more, or check out Schlitterbahn, where water rides abound.

Wonder World

Tired of the standard old theme parks? Give Wonder World a try instead. Situated in nearby San Marcos, Wonder World offers rides, an anti-gravity house, waterfalls, trains, an observation tower, a petting zoo and more. You can even tour the nation’s only earthquake-formed cave.

Paradise Canyon

Enjoy all the Texas landscape has to offer in Rio Medina’s Paradise Canyon. With swimming, camping, snorkeling, fishing, hiking, kayaking and more, the skies truly the limit in this outdoor sanctuary. There are even lodges and cabins on site, so you can soak in the star-lined views once the sun goes down.

Enchanted Rock

If you’re willing to drive a little further, Enchanted Rock is the place to go. Situated about 2 hours away in the little town of Fredericksburg, Enchanted Rock is a natural wonder. A 425-foot high formation made of pink granite, it’s one of the Lone Star State’s most beautiful landmarks. While you’re in town, be sure to check out one of the dozens of wineries in Fredericksburg—they’re a must after a long day of hiking!

Morgan’s Wonderland

Another alternative to the traditional theme parks you’re used to, Morgan’s Wonderland offers rides, water slides and playgrounds, all spread across a 25-acre park. There’s even a music garden and rides designed just for disabled children. Morgan’s Wonderland also regularly boasts live entertainers, and admission fees are just a fraction of what nearby Six Flags and SeaWorld charge.

Animal World & Snake Farm

Are you over the regular old zoos you grew up with? Try Animal World & Snake Farm in New Braunfels instead. With more than 500 types of animals, it offers a more up-close-and-personal experience than traditional zoos do. There are even regular opportunities to see, touch and even feed some of the animals throughout the day—something the kiddos aren’t sure to forget anytime soon.
