It’s almost that time of year again: the season for twinkling lights, gift shopping and Santa’s reindeer on the roof. The kids will be off from school, and it’s the perfect time for some good old family outings.

Luckily, the Schertz area is full of opportunities for festive family fun. Just check out these 8 unique events. Consider take your kids to one (or all) of them this holiday season!

Christmas Tree Lighting

Listen to live holiday music, come together with your neighbors and friends, and watch the city’s giant Christmas come to life! It all takes place Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. at the Hal Baldwin Municipal Complex at 1400 Schertz Parkway.

Festival of Angels

The city’s annual Christmas celebration, the Festival of Angels will boast a parade full of twinkling lights, visits and pictures with Santa and Mrs. Claus, and live musical entertainment from Schertz area bands, choirs and orchestras. There will even be a play! Food, beverages and holiday treats will be served, and real-life snow will even make an appearance at the festival’s “Mt. Schertz,” where you can slide and sled down like the northerners get to do! Check it all out Dec. 2 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Hal Baldwin Municipal Complex located at 1400 Schertz Parkway.

Kris Kringle Market

This holiday market brings together all of the best vendors and craftsmen to offer locals a handy, one-stop shop for all their seasonal gifts and stocking stuffers. Holiday Magic Festival of Lights

Located in nearby Selma, the Holiday Magic Festival of Lights is an East-meets-West holiday celebration you won’t want to miss. Check out millions of Christmas light displays, including themed ones and ones more than 30 feet tall! There’s also a 36-foot Christmas tree, a fireworks display every night, holiday parades, real-life snow and reindeer, cultural performances, food and beverages, and an opportunity for the kids to meet and take pictures with Santa. There are even areas to do your holiday shopping and fun carnival rides, like a Ferris wheel. The Lanterns of the World display is a must-see, too! Tickets are $26 for adults and $21 for children. Kids 3 and under are free, as are military members every Wednesday night. Admission includes unlimited carnival rides, pictures with Santa and more. It all takes place at Retama Park, 1 Retama Parkway in Selma.

Blue Santa

Want to use this holiday season to help those in need? Then participate in the city’s Blue Santa program. You can donate toys, cash or your time, and all donations will go toward making a less fortunate local family have a happy holiday. Christmas in the Park

Let the kids take lakeside pictures with Santa Claus, do fun, Holiday crafts or roast marshmallows by the fire. They can even make reindeer food to please Rudolph come Christmas night! It all happens Dec. 17 at the Main City Park in Live Oak.

Santa’s Ranch

Located in nearby New Braunfels, Santa’s Ranch is one of the top Christmas light displays in the state. Just drive through, and view the twinkling lights from the comfort and warmth of your car. Food and festive beverages are available, and the cost for entry is $28 per car. Santa’s Ranch is located at 9561 I-35 North and runs through Jan. 1.

Holiday in the Park

Check out holiday performances, eat yummy holiday treats and ride rollercoasters decked out in Christmas lights Nov. 19 through Jan. 2 at Six Flags Fiesta Texas in nearby San Antonio. You can also take a Christmas train ride, check out the nightly tree lighting, visit the North Pole or take pictures with Santa and his elves. The holiday fun is endless. Adult admission is $73.99, and children under 48” are $57.99. Kids 2 and under are free. Season ticket holders get free entry.
